FIRST UP: CANOLA OIL
Where do we begin? We have been so mislead when it comes to this oil. For years we have been told it is good for us, moderately priced and mixes well with most dishes.
CANOLA OIL- extracted from rapeseed plants, it used to be called rapeseed oil, and was only used for industrial purposes due to its effects on the heart from the erucic acid. It now has been genetically modified, to have lower amounts of erucic acid but still high amounts of trans fat (which are not listed on bottles) due to its heavy processing.
“Like all modern vegetable oils, canola oil goes through the process of caustic refining, bleaching and degumming–all of which involve high temperatures or chemicals of questionable safety. And because canola oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which easily become rancid and foul-smelling when subjected to oxygen and high temperatures, it must be deodorized. The standard deodorization process removes a large portion of the omega-3 fatty acids by turning them into trans fatty acids…research at the University of Florida at Gainesville, found trans levels as high as 4.6 percent in commercial liquid oil… they are not listed on the label”.
These type of high processed oils have only been introduced into our diet in the last thirty years. Cancer and Autoimmune disease is on the rise. I am not linking either, but if we can find a better option, why don't we?
SOYBEAN OIL-
Most products say " Vegetable oil" when soybean oil is used. It is said that getting some of this into our diet is good, but unfortunately Americans are getting too much of it unknowingly in our processed food, do to lack of accurate labeling. Even Smart Balance Butter and Oils, contain these nasty fillers, and even they admit it is a GMO product and they will, in the "future" be transitioning away from GMO's. Just say no to " soybean oil, and anything labeled as having "vegetable oil" listed in the ingredients.
SUNFLOWER AND SAFFLOWER OILS-
Like most highly processed oils, these are HEAVILY processed by using " traditional processioning methods" which includes using HEXANE.
Hexane is a chemical made from crude oil. Pure n-Hexane is a colorless liquid with a slightly disagreeable odor. It is highly flammable, and its vapors can be explosive. Pure n-Hexane is used in laboratories. Most of the n-Hexane used in industry is mixed with similar chemicals called solvents. The major use for solvents containing n-Hexane is to extract vegetable oils from crops such as soybeans. These solvents are also used as cleaning agents in the printing, textile, furniture, and shoe making industries. Certain kinds of special glues used in the roofing and shoe and leather industries also contain n-Hexane. Several consumer products contain n-Hexane, such as gasoline, quick-drying glues used in various hobbies, and rubber cement.
"Yes, the same chemical used for cleaning and painting is being poured over your vegetables. "
BETTER OIL OPTIONS:
Coconut Oil: can withstand high heat and high temperatures. Great for putting directly on the body for healing, moisture, and over all enjoyment. Can be used in baking, frying, or by itself. You can purchase in bulk off of amazon to keep it more affordable.
Hemp Oil: This is tasty and has a nutty flavor, much better for savory options like homemade salad dressings and cooking vegetables. It can withstand high heat. Hemp is the worlds most sustainable crop, so you will actually be supporting more than just your health. Mother Nature will thank you. :)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Not the best for when cooking, but great for using raw and on salads or in dressings. When high heat is applied, the profile of the oil changes and esssetially becomes toxic to our bodies. Be sure to be aware of your oil your grabbing as their is alot of misconception in the " EVOO" marking world. Organic is best and make sure their is no added "filler oils".
I know healthier food is sometimes more expensive, but so is seeing the doctor and so is cancer. What is a few more dollars on organic oil when a pint of ice cream is almost $5? I promise, your body will thank you and your mood will improve.
Happy Juicing Guys!
